The effect of single edge notched beam on the fracture mechanics, for example, crack observation, initiation, opening and propagation of hydroxyapatite samples were investigated in this study.

The effect of single edge notched beam on the fracture mechanics, for example, crack observation, initiation, opening and propagation of hydroxyapatite samples were investigated in this study. The strain evolution and cracking near the crack notch tip region on the strain map were in situ monitored using digital image correlation technique. The critical crack mouth and critical crack tip opening displacement were 40 and 17 ?m, respectively at critical bending load about 10 N. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique was established as a good and very precise tool for fracture measurements such as crack opening and length.
