Acronyms are one of the processes of word formation. It is defined as a word formed from the initial letters of a group of words.

The problem of the study is that the students at the Department of English cannot produce acronyms. On the other hand, the students at the Department of Arabic do not have this phenomenon in their textbooks. This study aims at investigating acronyms in English and Arabic and identifying and analyzing the errors the students of both departments are liable to make. It finds out the reasons beyond the students’ errors. It is hypothesized that: 1- Arab linguists believe that acronyms are not found in Standard Arabic and thus, are not extensively studied unlike English 2- Students at the Department of English are unable to identify the original words from which the acronyms are constructed 3- Their achievement in constructing acronyms is much better than producing their original words 4- Students at the Department of Arabic are incapable of recognizing the original words from which the acronyms are constructed 5- They are bad at producing acronyms 6- The performance of the students at the Department of English is better than the performance of the students at the Department of Arabic.
A diagnostic test has been designed and applied to a sample of 200 students at the departments of English and Arabic at the second year, College of Education, University of Babylon, 2009.

In the light of the students’ responses, it is concluded that: (1) acronyms have not been studied or written about thoroughly in Arabic, unlike English, (2) some of the acronyms that are used in the Internet and the Arabic media are borrowed from English and other global languages without translation, while most others are translated into Arabic and written in their full forms without using acronyms,(3) the students at the Department of English face real difficulties in knowing the words from which acronyms are constructed, (4) most of them can easily construct acronyms but they face more difficulties in discerning the words from which acronyms are constructed, (5) the achievement of the students at the Department of English is better than that of the Department of Arabic, (6) the subjects’ errors have been attributed to the following factors: (i) interlingual transfer, (ii) intralingual transfer, (iii)context of Learning,(iv) communication strategies.
