Abstract
This study aims to assess the immunological effect of the ps 80 when it was tested alone, as well as to assess the combining effect of this surfactant with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus antigen when tested in vivo.
The assessment of immunological effects of polysorbate 80 involved a random grouping of Albino Swiss male rats into four groups. Each group consisted of three rats, Group 1; injected with (7) doses of somatic antigen methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Group 2; injected with (6) doses of polysorbate 80 of 1% (v/v).
Group 3; injected with (7) doses of combination of antigen and surfactant in a volume ratio of 1:1. Group 4 kept without any injection and kept as a control group. Blood samples were collected from both control and tested groups to measure complement components C3 and C4 and to measure anti- methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus antigen antibody.
The results revealed that when polysorbate 80 was injected in combination with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus antigens, was significantly (p ? 0.05) elevates the levels of both complement C3 and C4. It showed an extremely significant (p ? 0.001) elevation in the level of antibody titers.
As a conclusion, polysorbate 80 showed an adjuvant activity when combined with bacterial antigens represented by the elevation of the levels of both complement C3 and C4 as well as extreme elevation in the level of anti- methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus antibody titers.
