Effect of Zn and Fe Spray and Harvesting Time on Volatile Oil Properties and Constituents in Mentha spicata and Mentha longifolia Leaves.

Abstract :
 
A field experiment was carried out for two successive seasons (1997 and 1998) to study the effect of Zinc sulphate (ZnSO4.7H2O) at rates of (0 , 4  and 8 kg/ha) , and chelated iron (Sequestren, 10%Fe) at rates of 0 and 30 kg/ha on volatile oil properties and constituents in Mentha spicata and Mentha longifolia Leaves.
 
Specific gravity and density of volatile oils were not affected by Zn or Fe spray in both species.
 
 Harvesting time however, had significant effect on both properties where the oil of the spring harvest of 1997 (first harvest) had the highest and that of the spring harvest of 1998 (fourth harvest)had the lowest specific gravity and density. Zinc spray reduced refractive index in M. longifolia only and this way attributed to the differences in menthol content of the oil of both species.
 
 
Highest refractive index was found in the oil of the spring and summer harvests of 1997 as compared to the oil of autumn (1997) and spring (1998) harvests. These results were attributed to the accumulation of slow evaporative and oxygenous compounds.Results of GLC analysis revealed that oil of M. spicata contained 30 – 38 compounds, where as that of M. longifolia contained 19 – 28 compounds, nine compounds of the oil of each species were tentatively identified.
 
Menthone was found in the oil of M. spicata noticed in the oil of M. longifolia. Zinc spray elevated the concentration of Limonene, eucalyptol and thyjone while iron of both species.
 
Oil of M.spicata leaves contained higher concentration of esters and alcohols as compared to the oil of M. longifolia which had higher concentration of Ketones. Accordingly, and for the high level of the menthol in the oil of M. spicata this oil was preferred as compared to M. longifolia oil.
