Abstract :
The genus Thymus L. ( Labiatae ) consist of about 215 species of herbaceous perennial and sub shrub plants . The Mediterranean region can be described as the center of the genus . The genous is represented in Iraq by 6 wild species .
Thymus species are commonly used as herbal tea , flavoring agents , condiments and spices , and medicinal plants . Among the species grown in Iraq , Thymus syriacus Boiss. and Thymus kotschyanus Boiss. and Heldr. Are more widely used for these purposes .
Essential oils isolated by steam distillation from the aerial parts of Thymus syriacus and Thymus kotschyanus were analyzed by using gas chromatography ( GC ) and GC / mass spectrometry ( MS ) .
Twenty five compounds representing 98.2 % of Thymus syriacus oil were identified . The main ones were thymol ( 74.3 % ) , p – cymene ( 6.1 % ) , caryophyllene ( 3.8 % ) and methyl carvacrol ( 3.2 % ) . Thirty compounds accounting for ( 99.1 % ) of Thymus kotschyanus oil were identified . The major constituents were thymol ( 38.6 % ) , carvacrol ( 33.7 % ) , terpinene ( 8.8 % ) and cymene ( 7.3 % ) . Both oils were found to be rich in monoterpene phenols , especially thymol and carvacrol .
