Hassan Alwan Hussien Babylon University –College of Medicine Abstract A cross sectional epidemiological study was conducted on a randomly collected 3000 prescriptions , prescribed by 286 physician in their private clinic in Hilla city ,Babylon province-Iraq during the period 1st of January 1995 through 31st of December 1995. It was shown that antimicrobial constitute the most frequently prescribed drugs (36.3%) ,followed by analgesics (17.4%) and tonics (12.4%). 80.6% of the prescriptions contained one or more antimicrobials .35.5% of prescriptions in this study contain two or more antimicrobials. Ampicilin was the most widely used antibiotics followed by cephalosporin ,erythromycin ,methprims and chloramphincol which formed 13.3% ,8.5% ,7.9% and 7.8% respectively. Gentamicine was prescribed in 7.7% of the total antimicrobials . 27.5 % of antibiotics prescribed was given parenterally. In conclusion unwise use of antimicrobials in is a dangerous practice which has its morbidity ,mortality and economic impact on the community.
