Iraqi EFL Learners Performance of Homophones

Abstract
This study
deals with homophones which is one aspect of sense relations in semantics. The problem is that Iraqi EFL university students
have difficulty in giving the right orthography of the homophone in addition to linking the spelling of the homophone
to its meaning. This study aims at evaluating students
achievement at the recognition and production levels and tries to clarify the
problems and to put solutions for them. It is hypothesized that: (1) most Iraqi
EFL university students have difficulty in distinguishing between the
homophones, (2) their performance at the recognition level is better than that
at the production one, and (3) they have difficulty in giving the right
spelling of the homophone. A test has been submitted to fourth year students
for the academic year (2007-2008), Department of English, College
of Education, University of Babylon.
In the light of students responses,
it can be concluded that: (1) they do not have difficulty in recognizing
homophones, (2) they have more difficulty at the production level than that at
the recognition one, (3) they face real difficulty in giving the right spelling
of the homophone, (4) students errors can be attributed to the following
factors: (1) interlingual transfer, this type of error constitutes (8.25%), (2)intralingual transfer, this type of error constitutes (48.69%), (3) context of
learning, this kind of error constitutes (18.59%), and (4) communication
strategies, which constitutes (24.47%).
